My eyes fluttered open. I saw a man hanging from chains with a tube extending from his arm. I traced the tube to my chest. It was copper and opaque but I imagined seeing a viscous red liquid flowing through it.
“Ah good, you are back”, a voice said from below. I shifted my gaze from the tube to a small round man with thick glasses looking up at me. I realized I too was hanging from chains and began to struggle.
“Oh, don’t bother with all that. You’re not going anywhere, my friend.”
“What do you want from me?”, I tried to keep my voice level even though terror surged through every fiber of my being.
“I only want to learn about you, my friend”
That phrase again, “My friend”, spoken in a way that let me know it was not sincere. A buzz started in my ears and a purple veil closed in on my eyes. I lost consciousness.
